Heritage classified

The monastery in its entirety, including the floors of the cloister courtyard and the locations of the south and north wings of the cloister of the church and the demolished chapel (see AK 73, 71, 72, 396, 397): inscription by order of 7 June 2013

Origin and history

The monastery of the Annonciades, located in Saint-Amour in the Jura, was founded in 1621 in the heart of the city, intra-mural. This religious complex, still surrounded by walls for a large part, underwent a major phase of construction in the 18th century. The buildings around the cloister, as well as the parallel arcade galleries, date from this period. Although the church and the south wing of the cloister have been demolished, traces of the church choir remain, and the north wing retains the original entrance.

The cloister courtyard, in continuity with a large orchard, could house in the basement remains of the chapel and ancient wells. The monastery, classified as Historical Monument in 2013, includes in its protection the floors of the courtyard and the locations of the missing wings. A private and communal property, its present state reflects the architectural transformations of the 17th and 18th centuries, marked by construction campaigns and partial demolitions.

The protected elements cover the entire monastery, including Cadastral parcels AK 73, 71, 72, 396 and 397. The precise address, indicated in the Mérimée base, places the monument between the streets of Corcelles, Granges and Terreaux. Despite changes over the centuries, the site maintains a coherent structure, reflecting its historical and architectural importance in the region.
