Origin and history
Mont-calvaire de Sombacour is a religious monument erected between 1890 and 1895, located in Sombacour and partly in the commune of Bians-les-Usiers, in the Doubs department. It consists of fourteen stations of the Way of the Cross, an oratory dedicated to the Virgin, a path connecting the whole, an upper terrace and a large wooden cross. The ensemble was listed as historical monuments on 23 August 1989 and labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage" by the Ministry of Culture.
The devotional path, scenographically located at the entrance of the village, climbs up to the top of a hill. The thirteen edicles house high-relief stone, while the oratory houses a lying Christ carved by Charles Auffret in 1956. The author of the stations, Jules Guillin de Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, also created the monument to the dead at the base of the Calvary, dated between 1891 and 1895.
The protected elements include the stations, the oratory, the path, the terrace and the cross, all listed under the reference cadastral AB 99. The site, owned by the municipality, is listed in the Merimée database under the code Insee 25549. Its architecture is part of the tradition of European sacred and calvary mountains, typical of Christian regions.
The Mount Calvary illustrates both the 19th century religious art and the artistic additions of the 20th century, such as Christ lying in 1956. Its inscription as a historic monument underlines its heritage value, both for its devotional aspect and for its landscape integration at the entrance to the village of Sombacour.
