Origin and history

The Montluçon fondue tower is mentioned in the context of the boulevard de Courtais, a major road in the city that surrounds the old town. This boulevard, created in the 19th century, replaced the old filled ditches of Montluçon, transformed into gardens before their urbanization. The linden initially bordered these boulevards, reflecting a desire for urban beautification.

The Hotel de la Tour Fondue, located on this boulevard, takes its name from the Cousin family of La Tour-Fondue, a notable local lineage. This monument is part of an architectural complex including also the Hotel de la Romager, linked to the family Le Groing de La Romager. These buildings recall the importance of bourgeois families in the urban history of Montluçon.

The boulevard de Courtais, named in tribute to Amable de Courtais, was unified in 1882 under this unique name, bringing together the former boulevards of the College, Bretonnie and the Town Hall. This restructuring illustrates the urban transformations of the late 19th century, marked by the modernization of traffic routes and the enhancement of historical heritage.
