Origin and history

The Monument to General Maistre and the 21st Army Corps is erected in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Located on Municipal Road No. 9 of Bouvigny, near Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, this monument commemorates the soldiers of the 21st Army Corps who fought during the First World War. It has been classified as a Historical Monument since a decree of 28 March 2017, stressing its heritage and memorial importance.

Designed by architects Max Blondat (known as Maximilian Blondat) and Louis-Marie Cordonnier, this monument is part of a landscape marked by the battles of the Great War, especially those of the Artois. The region, deeply affected by the fighting, has seen the emergence of many national memorials and necropolises. This specific monument honours General Maistre, a military figure associated with this period, as well as the units under his command.

The site, located in the territory of the commune of Ablain-Saint-Nazaire (code Insee 62001), enjoys heritage protection which covers all its structure. Its location, close to the site known as Notre-Dame-de-Lorette — a high place of memory of the 14-18 war — reinforces its symbolic dimension. Available data do not indicate whether the monument is open to the public or offers ancillary services such as guided tours.

The listing of Historic Monuments in 2017 attests to its historical and architectural value. This classification applies to the entire monument, including its immediate environment, as defined by the cadastre (Section A, Parcel No.6). Sources also refer to an approximate GPS location, but do not specify its current accessibility or conservation status.
