Origin and history
The monument dedicated to André Boillot, located in Montgivray in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is an emblematic work of Art Deco, designed by sculptors Jan and Joël Martel in 1933. This project was funded by the Automobile Club de France, and its sculpture architecture embodies the dynamism that characterized the driver's career, both in aviation and in car racing. The reliefs of the monument depict Boillot's sporting exploits, which died tragically in 1932 during the preparation of a motor race, precisely in the place where it was erected.
The monument is distinguished by its bold shape, typical of Art Deco aesthetics, which combines geometric rigor and movement. It was classified as a Historic Monument by order of April 13, 2017, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. Located on the coast of Ars, at the place called "Le Champ de Fresne", it now belongs to an association. Its location, marked by an approximate GPS location, remains a lasting tribute to one of the most emblematic athletes of its time.
The work of the Martel brothers is part of a context where art and technology meet, reflecting the enthusiasm of the 1930s for speed and innovation. André Boillot, a leading figure in car racing and aviation, embodies this era of technical progress and sporting challenges. The monument, by its design and its history, bears witness to the tribute paid to a man whose life was entirely devoted to performance and daring.
