Origin and history
The Bielle Memorial to the Dead, located near the Town Hall, was built in 1924 to honour the victims of the First World War. He is distinguished by his sculpture representing a peasant woman from the valley of Ossau running a soldier, highlighting the craftsmanship of trenches, including the soldier's cane. This monument, because of its artistic quality, is a poignant testimony of local recognition of fallen soldiers.
The monument was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 21 October 2014, thus protecting the entire structure. It is the collaborative work of sculptor A. Jouanneault, architect Caresse and entrepreneur Lafaille. Its location in Bielle, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, makes it a central element of the collective memory of this commune of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note of 5/10), and it belongs to the municipality of Bielle. This monument also illustrates the role of monuments to the dead in the small French communes after 1918, where each village sought to honour its missing children, often with strong local symbols, such as this Ossalian peasant.
