Origin and history

The Estagel Memorial to the Dead is a commemorative work dedicated to soldiers who died during the First World War. Created by the sculptor Gustave Violet, it stands on Victor Hugo Boulevard, opposite the cemetery of the commune. Its designation as historic monuments, effective since 18 October 2018, highlights its heritage and memorial importance for the Occitanie region.

This monument is part of a series of national tributes erected after 1918, reflecting collective mourning and recognition of the sacrifices made. The Pyrénées-Orientales, like other French departments, saw these buildings flourish in almost every municipality, often financed by public subscription or by municipalities. Their style varies according to the local artists, but their function remains universal: to perpetuate the memory of the disappeared.

The work of Estagel is distinguished by its author, Gustave Violet, a sculptor whose achievements mark the regional artistic landscape. The precise location of the monument, in front of the cemetery wall (park AE 46), reinforces its anchoring in public space and its symbolic dimension. Its official ranking in 2018 attests to its historical value, both for local memory and for national heritage.
