Origin and history
Thuir's Memorial to the Dead is a commemorative work dedicated to soldiers who fell during the First World War. Created by the sculptor Gustave Violet, it is distinguished by its urban integration on the avenue du Maréchal Joffre, accompanied by two adjoining gates. This monument, typical of the local homages of the inter-war period, reflects the effort of collective memory in the small French communes.
Listed as historical monuments on October 18, 2018, the monument also includes the gates of the nearby cemetery in its protection. This official recognition underscores its heritage and artistic importance, as well as its role in preserving the memory of 20th century conflicts. The communal property ensures its conservation, while its precise location (cadastral park AE 560) attests to its anchoring in the urban landscape of Thuir.
The Pyrénées-Orientales, a region with a strong Catalan identity, has many monuments with similar deaths, reflecting a regional desire to perpetuate the memory of the sacrifices made. Thuir's monument is part of this tradition, while distinguishing itself by its recent inscription in the protected heritage, a relatively rare case for this type of building. Available sources, such as the Mérimée base or the work of the Catalan cartophile club, document its history and symbolic value.
