Origin and history

The Jacquard monument is a sculptural achievement located in Saint-Étienne, in the Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 20th century, it pays tribute to Joseph Marie Jacquard, inventor at the beginning of the 19th century of the mechanical loom that revolutionized the textile industry. This monument, of parallelepipedic shape, is decorated with bronze plates illustrating scenes of Jacquard's life and flanked by statues, offering an artistic and historical representation of his technical contribution.

The initiative of this monument is the responsibility of the Stéphanois ribbon manufacturer Pierre Deville, who bequeathed by will in 1905 a sum intended for its construction. The monument, entrusted to the sculptor Paul Landowski, was inaugurated in 1912. It symbolizes both the tribute to a local inventor and the industrial dynamism of Saint-Étienne, a city marked by its manufacturing past, especially in the field of ribbons and textiles. The monument has been listed as historic monuments since March 25, 2016, recognizing its heritage value.

The Jacquard monument is located in Jacquard Square, in the heart of Saint-Étienne, and belongs to the commune. Its protection covers the entire work, as defined by the registration order. Precise, although documented, localization is assessed as moderately reliable according to available sources, possibly reflecting historical adjustments or imprecise records. This monument remains a major artistic and historical testimony of French industrial innovation and its territorial anchor.
