Origin and history
The Monument to the Deaths of Castets is a tribute to the victims of the First World War, erected between 1923 and 1924. It is distinguished by a bronze statue depicting a Landaise, a local symbol, backed by a Bidarray pink stone base decorated with tombs of soldiers. This monument, typical of post-war commemorations, combines funeral art and regional identity.
The work is signed by the sculptor Edward Cazaux, a Dutch artist whose style marks several monuments in the region. The base and statue, fully protected since 2014, are integrated into a communal square. Their location between the streets of J.N.-Serret and Castetbert, near the church, makes it a central point of the collective memory of Castets.
Ranked as a Historic Monument in 2014, this monument illustrates the memory reconstruction effort of the 1920s. The Bidarray Stone, a local noble material, and bronze underline the care taken to make it. Owned by the commune, there remains a place of recollection and artistic testimony of the post-war period in New Aquitaine.
