Origin and history
The Dieppe Memorial to the Dead is dedicated to soldiers who fell during World War I. Located in Square Carnot, it was completely classified by decree in January 2022, including the monument itself, an enclosure bounded by six bounds connected by chains, as well as the surroundings arranged in flowered beds. This site is part of the public domain and belongs to the municipality of Dieppe.
The precise location of the monument is documented in the Merimée base, with an approximate GPS location at 6 Desmarets Street. Although details of its construction or inauguration are not mentioned, its recent listing as a historic monument underscores its heritage importance. The presence of a sacred enclosure and landscaped treatment reflects a desire for solemn commemoration.
Dieppe, the port city of Seine-Maritime, played a significant role during the two world wars. Monuments to the dead of that time were often designed as collective gathering places, incorporating symbolic elements (lines, chains, flowers) to honour the sacrifices of the soldiers. Their central location, as here at Carnot Square, strengthened their social and memorial function in the heart of cities.
