Origin and history

The monument to Lazare Carnot, located in Carnot Square in Nolay (Côte d'Or), was erected as a tribute to Lazare Carnot (1753–1823), nicknamed the organizer of the victory for his key role in the reorganization of the French army during the Revolution. He also symbolized his contribution to the founding of the École Polytechnique in 1794 alongside Gaspard Monge. The statue represents him standing, holding a compass (symbol of science) and laying his hand on a map of the Battle of Wattignies, with a winged Victory at the rear.

The project was founded in 1878 by a committee chaired by the Mayor of Nolay, financed by an international public subscription. A competition was launched in 1881, won by sculptor Jules Roulleau. The stone pedestal of Burgundy, designed by architect Deglane, was inaugurated on September 3, 1882. A bronze reduction of the statue even decorated the office of Sadi Carnot at the Elysée. The monument, including its urban development (grill, balustrade), was listed in the Historic Monuments on August 31, 2023.

The location in front of the Carnot family house in Nolay highlights the deep link between the stateman and this Burgundy town. The base bears the inscription: "1753 - 1823 / CARNOT / ORGANISATOR OF VICTORY / NATIONAL SUBCRIPTION 1882", recalling its military and scientific heritage. The winged Victoire behind him evokes the boundaries restored by his strategies, while the compass refers to his commitment to education and science.
