Origin and history

The monumental cross of Vernantois, located on Rue du Calvaire, is an imposing seven-metre high building erected in the middle of the sixteenth century. Its capital, dated 1550 by ecus, and its cross reflect the stylistic influences of the Renaissance, while its base with prisms and mouldings retains Gothic features. This mix of styles reflects a period of artistic transition between the Middle Ages and the modern era.

The monument consists of a base with a desk, topped by a second moulded base, then the capital and the cross itself. Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 2 August 2006, this cross belongs to the municipality of Vernantois and is located at the intersection of the rue du Calvaire and the municipal road No. 24. Its state of conservation and its location make it a significant heritage element of the region.

The location of the cross, although specified by an address (9 rue du Calvaire), is considered of poor accuracy (note of 5/10). This type of monument, often linked to religious or commemorative uses, played a central role in the life of the rural communities of Franche-Comté in the 16th century, marking gathering places or processional paths.
