Origin and history

The monument to Clovis Hugues, located Place de l'Archevêché in Embrun, was erected in 1909 to honour this poet, politician and felibre. The work consists of a pedestal shaped like an obelisk, surrounded by a curved bench. The pedestal supports a bronze bust by Clovis Hugues, accompanied by a sheet engraved with a sonnet dedicated to the city of Embrun. These elements were made by the sculptor Ferdinand Faivre.

To the right of the bench, a carved group represents a young girl sitting reading a book to a standing boy, probably symbolizing the transmission of knowledge or poetry. This group, along with the bust, are the work of Jeanne Royannez-Hugues, widow of Clovis Hugues and talented sculptor. The models used for this group were his own grandchildren, adding a personal and intimate dimension to the work.

The monument, classified as Historic Monument by decree of 23 July 2009, is the property of the municipality of Emprun. It embodies both an artistic tribute and a testimony to the cultural and political commitment of Clovis Hugues, a prominent figure in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region at the turn of the 20th century.
