The monument to the dead in its entirety (cf. A 616, cf. plan annexed to the decree): registration by decree of 21 October 2014
Origin and history
The Perquie Memorial to the Dead is a tribute to the 21 soldiers of the commune who fell during the First World War. Located in the communal cemetery, it is distinguished by its simplicity: a cross placed on a rectangular base, supplemented by sarcophagi symbolizing the graves of the victims. The names of the deceased are engraved on a plaque on the base, creating a sober and commemorative ensemble.
Ranked as a Historic Monument, this building was fully registered by order of 21 October 2014. It belongs to the commune of Perquie, in the Landes department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its location, although specified by an address (771 Route de Zioubane), is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10), perhaps reflecting its isolation or approximate geographic data.
This monument illustrates the local memorial effort after the Great War, when the French communes erected thousands of similar structures to honor their deaths. In the Landes, a region marked by a rural and forestry economy, these monuments played a central role in social cohesion, recalling the collective sacrifice and anchoring the memory of the disappeared in public space.
Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its protected status and communal property. No information is provided on any specific architects, sculptors or sponsors, or on opening ceremonies. The whole remains a sober testimony of the tragic history of the commune during the conflict.
