Origin and history

The monument to the dead of Saint-Chély-d'Apcher, located in Lozère (Occitanie), is dedicated to the soldiers of the commune who disappeared during the 20th century wars. It consists of a bronze statuary group representing a hairy woman wrapped in a shroud, accompanied by a laurel crowned woman holding a mortuary crown. The ensemble rests on a granite pedestal surrounded by twelve shells, measuring 2.22 m high. The names of the soldiers are engraved on polished granite plates.

The decision to build this monument was taken on 19 October 1919, and its inauguration took place on 24 September 1922. The statuary, by Maxime Real del Sarte, was melted by the Montagutelli foundry at a total cost of 25,000 francs, including 18,000 francs for sculpture alone. This monument, owned by the commune, was listed as historic monuments on October 18, 2018, among 42 other monuments in the Occitanie region protected for their heritage value.

Located on the Place du Foirail, in the heart of Saint-Chely-d'Apcher, the monument symbolizes the mourning and the collective tribute. His artistic style and composition reflect the memorial codes of the post-First World War, mixing solemnity and emotion. The presence of border shells reinforces its anchor in the context of the armed conflicts of the early twentieth century.

The monument is referenced in the base Mérimée under the code PA48000024 and located precisely at the address: Place du Foirail, 48200 Saint-Chely-d'Apcher. Its protection covers the entire structure, including pedestal and decorative elements, as stipulated in the 2018 Registration Order. This communal heritage remains accessible to the public, reflecting local and national history.
