Origin and history
The Monument to the Dead of Sens District is a memorial building located in Place des Héros in Sens, in the department of Yonne (89). Built in the twentieth century, it pays tribute to the victims of the conflicts of the twentieth century, especially those arising from the borough. Its inscription as a Historic Monument by order of 7 April 2016 attests to its heritage value, including the monument in its entirety, its soils, its developments (grills, plantations) and its immediate environment. Although not cadastred, it is integrated into the communal public domain, reflecting its anchor in local collective memory.
Designed by architects Émile Peynot and Émile Jarlat, the monument illustrates the architectural styles and memorial concerns of the inter-war period. The location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the databases, corresponds to the official address 11 Place des Héros, confirmed by GPS coordinates. This monument is part of a regional context marked by Burgundy-Franche-Comté, where tributes to the deaths of the Great War and subsequent conflicts shaped the urban landscape and collective memory.
The legal protection of the monument, including its "developments with its grids and plantations", underlines the importance attached to its physical and symbolic integrity. Owned by the commune of Sens, it embodies both a duty of memory and an element of local heritage, accessible to the public. Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its status as a heritage object studied and referenced, although some data (such as cartographic accuracy) remain perfectable.
