Origin and history
The monument to the dead of Avallon, located in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a creation of sculptor Pierre Vigoureux, originally from the city. The latter, a veteran, wished to offer his commune a pacifist tribute to his fellow soldiers. The work is distinguished by an original iconography: a hairy dressed in a winter costume, evoking the rigors of the trenches, and disarmed in front of an Art Deco portico. This choice symbolizes the suffering of soldiers and a desire for peace.
The monument, fully classified (including its balustrades and gardeners) by order of 7 April 2016, is located on the promenade des Capucins. Vigourous there expresses a humanist vision of war, far from traditional glorifications. The approximate GPS address (2 Rue de Lyon) and its Insee code (89025) confirm its anchoring in the local heritage of the Yonne, department of Auxerrois.
Owned by the commune of Avallon, this monument illustrates the evolution of the post-Great War memorials, where Art Deco and pacifism mingle. Its recent registration (2016) highlights its historical and artistic value. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), makes it a landmark in the urban landscape, between collective memory and sculptural creation.
