Origin and history

The Memorial to the Dead of Labenne, located near the church, commemorates the victims of the First World War. He represents a resinier leaving his work to join the front, illustrating the sacrifice of the local workers. This monument, typical of the Landes, reflects the importance of resin and forests in the economy and regional culture at the beginning of the 20th century.

Directed by the sculptor Lucien Danglade between 1925 and 1927, this monument was moved and lost its original surroundings. It was registered as a Historical Monument by order of 21 October 2014, thus protecting the entire structure. The current location, although modified, remains close to the church, in the heart of the village.

The monument embodies the collective memory of the inhabitants of Labenne and the Landes, where the war marked a break in the daily life of the residents. His artistic style and symbolism make him a poignant testimony of this period, while emphasizing the role of local artisans such as Lucien Danglade in preserving regional history.
