Origin and history

The Peyrehorade Memorial to the Dead was built in 1922 at the end of the girls' school yard. It follows a standardized model provided by the Marbreries Générales, a Parisian company specialized in this type of achievement. The monument is distinguished by its pedestal in pink granite, topped by a winged Victoire carved in Carrara marble, a noble material often used for memorials of the era.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, it was registered in full (including its square and grid) by order of 21 October 2014. This monument reflects the national effort to commemorate after the First World War, with a precise location in Peyrehorade (Landes), near the church and Aristide Briand Square. Its standardized design illustrates the will of many French communes to honor their dead in a uniform and solemn manner.

The location of the monument, originally planned in a school space, highlights its anchoring in the daily life of the community. Today, there remains a strong symbol of local collective memory, managed by the municipality of Peyrehorade. Its state of conservation and legal protection testify to its heritage importance in the Landes department and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
