Origin and history

The Ostein castral motte is a monument located in Issenheim, in the Greater East Region. This type of structure, typical of the Middle Ages, generally served as a defence point or seigneurial residence. Castral mots were often built on elevations of land, surrounded by ditches, to strengthen their protection.

In the historical context of the Great East, castral mots played a key role in feudal organization. They allowed control of the surrounding territories and provided refuge for local populations in the event of conflict. These constructions reflect the strategic importance of the region, marked by trade and political tensions during the Middle Ages.
