Origin and history
The feudal motte of Aulnoye-Aymeries is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the Northern Department (59). Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, this site illustrates the defensive architecture typical of the Middle Ages, with a castral motte serving as a point of surveillance and refuge. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 21 April 1988 bears witness to its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this vestige of medieval times.
The location of the motte at 1 Chemin de Gommegnies is considered satisfactory (note of 8/10 for accuracy), which facilitates its identification and access. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not detail its specific history, this type of structure was generally linked to the local seigneurial organization, playing a key role in protecting territories and populations during the Middle Ages.
At that time, the Hauts-de-France region, and particularly the North, was marked by intense agricultural activity and increasing trade. Feudal mottes, such as Aulnoye-Aymeries, often served as power centres for local lords, around which villages and economic activities were organized. Their presence also reflects the political and military tensions characteristic of the 12th and 13th centuries, a period of consolidation of royal power in the face of feudals.
