Origin and history
The feudal motte des Murailles is a medieval vestige located on the territory of Saint-Christophe-du-Luat, a delegated commune integrated in Évron since 2019. Dated from the 11th century, this castral moth illustrates the typical defensive organization of the feudal era, with an elevation of land surrounded by ditches, often surmounted by a wooden or stone tower. It is one of many fortified sites built to control local territories and ensure the protection of lords and people.
The motte and the adjacent building, known as the Murailles, were registered as historical monuments by order of 21 December 1984. This protection recognizes their heritage value and their role in regional history. The site is located precisely at 5215 Les Murailles, in the municipality of Saint-Christophe-du-Luat, in the department of Mayenne. Although the sources do not specify its current state or conditions of visit, its inscription bears witness to its importance for understanding the Middle Ages in the Pays de la Loire.
At the time of its construction, in the 11th century, the region was marked by a fragmentation of power between local lords. The castral mots, like the Murailles, served as administrative, military and sometimes economic centres. They symbolized the seigneurial authority while offering protection against the frequent conflicts of this period. Their establishment often met strategies to control the communication axes or surrounding agricultural resources.
