Origin and history
The water mill of Brienne-la-Veille is an emblematic building located in the municipality of the same name, in the Aube department, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 19th century, this flour mill is distinguished by its wood-pan architecture, sturdiness and sounding, as well as its sophisticated hydraulic system. It is located on a bipolar roadway, with two rectangular, raised water tracks, and was equipped with turbines whose transmissions are still visible today. A third turbine, once installed on the right bank, bears witness to its past industrial importance.
Ranked as historical monuments in 1987, this mill illustrates the rural industrial heritage of Champagne-Ardenne. Its mechanism, partially preserved, reflects the technological advances of the period in milling. The building, now owned by a private company, remains a remarkable example of adapting traditional mills to 19th century innovations, such as the use of turbines to optimize flour production.
The location of the mill, at the Moulin Road in Brienne-la-Veille, makes it a point of historical and technical interest in the local landscape. Although its geographical accuracy is assessed as "a priori satisfactory", its exact address and current status (open or closed to visit) are not clearly documented in available sources. This monument belongs to the list of protected buildings of the Dawn, alongside other emblematic sites of the region.
