Origin and history
The Chaussée Watermill, also known as the Grand Chenillé Mill, is an iconic building located in Chenillé-Changé, Maine-et-Loire department. Originally built in the 16th century, it was mentioned in 1551 as comprising two wheat mills and a rye mill, then dependent on the Château des Rues. This mill is remarkable for its wheel, the only one still active on the Mayenne at that time.
At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1902, a four-level square tower was added to the old building to serve as a mill, illustrating the evolution of milling techniques. Together, including its mechanisms, is listed as historic monuments in 2005, thus recognizing its heritage importance. The mill is now fully protected, with its mechanical elements still preserved.
Located in the commune of Chenillé-Changé, this mill bears witness to the industrial and agricultural history of the region. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments makes it a place of interest for the study of ancient cereal production techniques and the use of hydraulic energy in Anjou.
