Origin and history

The Châlons-en-Champagne windmill is a historic tower-like monument, probably built in the seventeenth century. Although its exact date of construction remains unknown, its chalkstone architecture is characteristic of the mills of that time. It is located on Rue Émile Morel, in the city of Châlons-en-Champagne, in the department of Marne (51), in the region of Grand Est. This mill was inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 7 February 1975, under the cadastral reference BX 125a.

The mill operated until the middle of the 20th century, when it ceased to operate. Today, it is owned by a professional body. Although its current use (visit, rental, accommodation) is not specified in available sources, its location is considered satisfactory, with an estimated accuracy of 8 out of 10. This type of mill played a central role in the local economy, especially for the milling of cereals, an essential activity in an agricultural region such as Champagne.

Windmills, such as Châlons-en-Champagne, were vital infrastructure for rural communities before industrialization. They were used to transform local crops into flour, a food base. Their decline in the 20th century is often linked to the arrival of new technologies and the mechanization of agriculture. This mill, by its inscription in the Historical Monuments, bears witness to this industrial and architectural heritage today preserved.
