The whole mill; the facades and roofs of the miller's house (cad. AH 74, 72): registration by order of 28 January 2004

Origin and history

The Gensac windmill, located in Montpézat in Gers, is a building dated from the first quarter of the 19th century, more precisely from 1801 according to the sources. This mill is distinguished by its brick and stone construction, as well as its wooden shingle roof. It still retains today its original mechanism, a rare detail for this type of monument. Its structure includes a cylindrical tower, a living ground floor, a milled room in height and a hat covered with oak scales, typical elements of windmills of that time.

Ranked as a Historic Monument, the mill was officially protected by order of 28 January 2004. This decree covers the entire mill as well as the facades and roofs of the miller's house, located nearby. The site also includes a tourist accommodation offer, "La Maison du Meunier", opened from April to October, which reflects the adaptive reuse of this industrial heritage. GPS coordinates and precise address (5006 Le Moulin, 32220 Montpézat) allow to locate this monument in a rural setting, characteristic of the Gers department.

The Gensac mill illustrates the utility architecture and windmill engineering of the early 19th century in Occitanie. These structures played a central role in the local economy, allowing the milling of cereals for the surrounding agricultural communities. Their gradual decline, linked to industrialization and new technologies, makes them today valuable witnesses to the rural and artisanal heritage of the region. The preservation of its mechanism and architectural elements makes it a remarkable example of this type of construction.
