Origin and history
The windmill in Pargeat is a circular mill-tour building built in 1817 on the Ally plateau, 900 metres above sea level. Built in rubble, it is surmounted by a rotary conical roof covered with joint boards, and its wooden wings have recently been renovated. This mill still retains its original mechanism in perfect condition, and its restoration was undertaken by an association dedicated to its preservation.
After the French Revolution and the abolition of feudal rights, the first half of the 19th century saw the construction of many mills in France, often artisanal or family. Those of Ally, dating from about 1820, illustrate this period of economic and social development. At its peak, the Ally plateau had more than a dozen mills, taking advantage of the ideal conditions offered by its altitude.
The windmill in Pargeat was listed as historical monuments by order of 27 June 1984. Today, it is owned by an association that works for its conservation and enhancement. Although its wings have been redone, its original structure, including a rotating frame and a pole allowing the roof to rotate, remains intact.
This monument reflects the importance of windmills in 19th century rural life, serving as both a symbol of technical progress and a central place for local agricultural activities. Its location on the Ally plateau, in the Haute-Loire, makes it a representative example of architecture and engineering of the time.
