Former mill, including its mechanism and the bief (Case ZD 23): Order of 28 December 1984

Origin and history

Dompremy Mill, located in the eponymous commune in the Grand Est region, is a flour mill originally dating back at least to the sixteenth century, with records written in 1511 and 1574. Although partially built in the 18th century, it underwent major transformations in the 19th century, marking its architectural and functional evolution. The building, characterized by its two floors with wooden panels, torchis and planks, still houses a hydraulic wheel with curved metal blades, designed to operate a pair of grinding wheels. Its mechanism, still in place, bears witness to its historical use.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 28 December 1984, the Dompremy mill includes in its protection the old building, its mechanism and the adjacent beef. This ranking underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in local industrial history. The site, although transformed, retains technical and structural elements representative of traditional flour mills, illustrating the adaptation of hydraulic techniques to the agricultural needs of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The location of the mill, at the approximate address 5002 Rue du Château à Dompremy, is documented in the Mérimée base, with an Insee code (51215) linking the commune to the department of Marne and the former Champagne-Ardenne region, now integrated in the Grand Est. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated to be satisfactory a priori, facilitating its identification in the local landscape. No information is available about its current accessibility (visits, services) or possible contemporary uses such as room rental or accommodation.
