Origin and history
The mill of the Lande du Crac'h is a windmill located in the town of La Clarté, in the commune of Perros-Guirec, in the Côtes-d'Armor department. Dated from 1727, it belongs to the category of coiffier-type mills, a rare architecture in Brittany. Its tower, though cut off, retains distinctive features such as a live-jointed bellows and a corbelled bahut wall, evoking military influence. This type of construction reflects the local techniques of the time, adapted to the climatic and topographical constraints of the region.
A statistic from 1844 lists four mills in Perros-Guirec: three water mills and one windmill, confirming the rarity of the latter. Inside, remains of a stone staircase remain, testimony to its past use. The mill was registered as a historical monument by order of 27 June 1983, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Its present state, although partially altered, allows to study the Breton mills of the eighteenth century and their role in the local economy, especially for the milling of cereals.
The Perros-Guirec region, located on the north coast of Brittany, was at that time marked by intense agricultural and maritime activity. Windmills, less frequent than watermills, were strategically placed to enjoy the prevailing winds. Their construction met community needs, often linked to milling or energy production for artisanal activities. The mill of the Lande du Crac.
