Origin and history
The Moulin de la Montagne, located in Watten in the Hauts-de-France, is a mill tower built in the 18th century. This historic monument is distinguished by its octagonal limestone base, surmounted by a cylindrical structure alternating stone and brick, and a conical part. Its architecture reflects the construction techniques of the mills of this time, adapted to the agricultural and artisanal needs of the region.
Ranked a Historic Monument, the mill was significantly restored after its acquisition by the municipality in 1985. The works, led by the Association Régionale des Amis des Moulins (ARAM) du Nord-Pas de Calais, have restored its roof and wings, giving the monument its original functional appearance. The protected elements, registered by decree in 1977, include the remains of the mill, testifying to its heritage importance.
The Mountain Mill illustrates the central role of mills in the 18th century rural economy. This infrastructure was mainly used to grind cereals, an activity essential for local communities. Their presence often marked the landscape and structured the social and economic life of the villages. In Watten, as elsewhere in the Hauts-de-France, the mills were places of assembly and commerce, contributing to the dynamics of the territories.
