Origin and history

Lançay Mill is a water mill located in Questembert, Morbihan (Brittany), on the edge of the municipality of Molac. Located on an arm of the Lancet River, tributary of the Arz, it has existed since the end of the 14th century. Originally owned by the seigneury of Rochefort, he was then attached to the seigneuries of Talhouët, Ker Abraham and Châteaudérech. This monument bears witness to a long history of milling activity and the evolution of milling techniques.

Reconstructed in 1781, the mill operated with two wheels operating three pairs of grinding wheels. In the 19th century, he passed into the hands of different miller families. Its architecture, originally composed of two buildings, was partially modified around 1930 with the removal of a wing to adapt a new milling system. Today, it retains both traditional stone wheels and mechanical cylinders, illustrating this technical transition.

The Lançay Mill, including its main building, machinery, barn and hydraulic system (channels, bief, valves and dykes), was listed as a historic monument on January 7, 2003. The augets wheel, rebuilt identically, is 4.67 meters in diameter. Private property, there remains a remarkable example of the Breton industrial heritage linked to hydraulic energy.

The plots covered by the protection (ZC 17 to 26) include all the technical and hydraulic elements, stressing the importance of this site in local history. Its exact address is 6114 B Le Moulin de Lancay, 56230 Questembert, in the department of Morbihan (code Insee 56184).
