Origin and history
The Nançay Mill, located in Nargis in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a hydraulic work emblematic of the transition between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its pertuis, composed of two arches in basket coves and a stack in spur, spans the river Loing. This system, surmounted by a paved pavement, was equipped with valves to regulate water flow, illustrating the milling techniques of the time.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 3 May 1999, the pertuis of the Nançay mill testifies to the importance of hydraulic infrastructure in the local economy. These works, often built at the limit of centuries, played a key role in the production of flour and the management of watercourses, reflecting the ingenuity of artisans and the growing needs of rural communities.
The location of the monument in Nargis, Loiret, is part of a territory marked by the exploitation of river resources. The Loing, a navigable river and energy source, has favoured the establishment of many mills, including the Nançay mill. These structures, often associated with agricultural and commercial activities, were central to the economic and social life of the region.
