Origin and history

The Nanteuillet mill, located in Voulgézac in Charente, is a 17th century building, renovated in the early 20th century. It was initially a watermill, operated until the death of its last miller in 1900. His son-in-law then transformed him into a country residence, incorporating a garden and a pond designed by the landscape architect Eugene Bureau in 1927. The latter created a rose garden of a thousand plants, reflected in the mill's bay, and added decorative elements in moulded mortar, imitating nature.

The garden of the Nanteuillet mill is distinguished by its alliance between vegetal, mineral and water, typical of the Eugène Bureau style. The site also includes Art Deco furniture inspired by Majorelle, as well as bowl-windows and a balcony connecting the house to the garden. These developments highlight the harmony between architecture and landscape, rare in the region. The mill and its gardens were listed as historic monuments on November 9, 2010 for their originality and heritage value.

Today, the Nanteuillet mill is open to the public during the Rendez-vous aux jardins and by appointment. Visible from a hiking path, it retains its historical character while at the same time witnessing the evolution of usages, from milling activity to a residential and landscape vocation. Its garden, both food and ornamental, also illustrates the horticultural practices of the early 20th century in Charente.
