Origin and history
The mill of Saint-Jean is located in Laurabuc, in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region. This type of mill is distinguished by its conical wooden roof, which rotates to orient the wings in the direction of the wind. The internal mechanism, largely preserved, bears witness to its historical functioning. Although its exact construction period is not specified, its architecture is characteristic of medieval or post-medieval windmills adapted to the landscapes of Lauragais.
The mill was significantly restored in the early 1970s, when its conical plank roof and wooden wings were rebuilt. This intervention preserved its emblematic structure, classified as a Historical Monument by order of 17 April 1984. The site, although little documented about its origins, illustrates the importance of mills in the local rural economy, where they were used to grind cereals for the surrounding agricultural communities. Their high location, as here at Laurabuc, allowed to capture the prevailing winds of the region.
Today, the mill of Saint John remains an architectural testimony of traditional milling techniques. Its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its preserved mechanism and for its role in the cultural landscape of Occitanie. The approximate location of the site, noted as 'a priori satisfactory', suggests a potential tourist or educational interest, although the practical information on its visit is not detailed in the available sources.
