Origin and history
The Séréac windmill, located on the eponymous road south of National 165 in Arzal (Morbihan), is an emblematic building of Breton heritage. Built in 1653 in granite bellows, this tower type mill originally belonged to the local seigneury. Its typical architecture and milling function make it a witness to the agricultural activities of the modern era in Brittany. Ranked a historic monument in 1937, it illustrates the importance of mills in the pre-industrial rural economy.
Originally conceived as a seigneurial mill, the Séréac mill has undergone several technical adaptations over the centuries. In 1905, it was equipped with Berton wings and raised to modernize its production, while continuing to operate in synergy with other local mills. His activity continued until 1950, when he finally stopped grinding the grain. After it was decommissioned, the mill was dismantled and transformed into a home, thus partially preserving its original structure.
The 1977 renovation marked a key step in the conservation of this monument, although its use has changed radically. Today, the Séréac mill remains a symbol of Breton milling know-how and the adaptation of historic buildings to new functions. Its ranking among historical monuments underscores its heritage value, while recalling the central role of mills in the daily life of rural communities before the 20th century.
The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a shell mill (small flour mill) and specify its exact address: 5052 Moulin de Sereac, in the municipality of Arzal (code Insee 56004). The protected elements, cadastralized under reference C 129, include the entire original structure, preserved despite subsequent transformations.
