Origin and history
The Visse mill, located in Maisnières in the west of the Somme department, is a hydraulic mill powered by the waters of the Vimeuse. Built in 1837, it represents a rare example of complete mill Picardie, keeping all its milling devices. Its modest architecture combines a wood frame building barred with clings and covered with slate, typical of 19th century rural industrial buildings. The mechanisms, both external (wheels, vanage) and internal (mills, cylinders, bluteries), remained functional until its operation ceased in 1961.
Protected under the title of historical monuments by order of 14 December 1990, the mill includes in its protection the main building, its mechanisms, the brought channel, the vanage and an adjoining building connected by a bridge. The augets wheel, restored in 1992, still runs today, although the mill no longer produces. The wheels, exceptionally kept outside, as well as the grain cleaning equipment and cast iron gears (Sloan and Cie brand) testify to its remarkable state of preservation. Private property, it is not open to the public but remains visible from the outside.
This mill illustrates the importance of small grain production units in Vimeu in the 19th century, a region marked by a dynamic rural economy. Its halt in 1961 reflects the growing mechanization of agriculture and the decline of traditional mills. The protection of 1990 underlines its heritage value, both for its architecture and for the scarcity of its intact equipment, offering a concrete testimony of pre-industrial milling techniques.
The available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) specify that the mill is located at 10 Rue du Moulin à Maisnières (code Insee 80500), in the Hauts-de-France region. Its vanage, equipped with three valves upstream, and its weir complete a functional hydraulic assembly, although production has ceased. The Creative Commons License of Associated Photos (Markus3) and its reference in the Merimée database confirm its outstanding architectural heritage status.
