Origin and history
The Mill des Buttes Saint-Julien is a windmill of cylindrical tower type, located in the commune of Renac, in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine in Brittany. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it embodies the typical architecture of the mills of this time, with a stone structure and two floors. It still has its original milling mechanisms, although its current functioning is not specified in the sources.
The monument stands on a hill at about 42 meters above sea level, south-west of the village of Renac, in the site of the Buttes Saint-Julien, from which it takes its name. Nearby are the ruins of a second mill, suggesting significant milling activity in this area. Its strategic location on a height probably allowed for the effective capture of the prevailing winds, essential for its operation.
Ranked among the historical monuments since May 24, 1974, the Mill des Buttes Saint-Julien illustrates the rural industrial heritage of Brittany. Its inscription bears witness to its architectural and historical interest, although the sources do not mention specific contemporary restorations or uses. The addition of Berton wings, an improved orientation system, apparently did not require an elevation of the structure.
The Brittany region in the 19th century was marked by a still largely agricultural economy, where windmills played a key role in the processing of cereals. These infrastructure, often community-based, facilitated the production of flour for local populations. The gradual decline in their use, with industrialisation, has led to the abandonment of many mills, as evidenced by the nearby ruins of this site.
