Origin and history
The Mill des Mondrins is a tower windmill built in granite in the 19th century. It is located in Cherrueix, Ille-et-Vilaine department, Brittany. This mill is part of a set of three mills aligned along the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, including also the Saline mill and the Colimassière mill. Its architecture and location testify to the exploitation of the regular winds of the bay for milling.
Like the other two mills in Cherrueix, the Mill des Mondrins was listed as historical monuments on 7 September 1977. Today, it no longer retains its wings, but its directional guivre is still visible. A house on the raised ground floor, built in the early 20th century, is nearby. The mill is currently being restored and belongs to the municipality.
The three Cherrueix mills, of the same volume and style, illustrate the historic importance of milling in this coastal region. Their individual protection reflects their heritage value, linked to the economic activity and cultural landscape of Mont Saint-Michel Bay. Their geographical proximity suggests a collective organization of wind exploitation, an abundant resource in this area.
