Auges wheel with shelter (Box F 3): registration by order of 12 September 1969
Origin and history
The mill of Mesnil-sur-Opton, located in the commune of Boutigny-Prouais (Eure-et-Loir), is a rare example of an existing and still active auger mill. This type of mechanism, operated by hydraulic force, illustrates the traditional milling techniques, which have now disappeared in most French regions. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1969 underlines its heritage importance, particularly for the conservation of artisanal know-how related to the processing of cereals.
The location of the mill, specified with a reliability considered "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), is attested by GPS coordinates and an official address in the Merimée base. The protected element, i.e. the blade wheel and its shelter, dates from the registration order of 12 September 1969. This mill is part of a rural landscape marked by agricultural activity, where mills played a central role in the local economy, both for flour production and as a place of sociability and exchange.
Although available sources (Monumentum, internal data) do not detail its history before the 20th century, its current status as a Historic Monument and its rarity make it a valuable testimony of pre-industrial techniques. The auges mills, less widespread than the horizontal or vertical wheeled mills, operated thanks to a system of buckets filled with water, operating a rotation mechanism. Their preservation makes it possible to study the evolution of renewable energies before the industrial era.
