Origin and history
The Moulin du Sud, located in Steenvoorde in Hauts-de-France, is a windmill of the pivot type probably built in 1576 (date worn on the structure). This flour mill, characteristic of Flemish buildings, rests on wooden feet anchored in brick masses. Its wings, composed of small, triple-compartment wood ties, and its board-smelling cabin under a slightly curved roof make it a remarkable example of traditional milling architecture.
The low structure of the mill is protected by a hexagonal shelter in planks, covered with tavaillons. Access to the cabin is by a ladder cut at half height by directional guivre, a mechanism typical of the pivot mills. Although its construction dates back to the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, its period of main activity was associated with the 4th quarter of the 18th century. The mill benefited from a careful exterior restoration after its protection under the Historical Monuments in 1977, ensuring its conservation.
Filed by order of 24 October 1977, the Moulin du Sud is now owned by the municipality of Steenvoorde. Its early registration (since 1970 under the legislation of 1930) underscores its heritage importance. Although the information on its current use (visits, rentals) is not specified, its state of conservation and exact location (Wormhout Road or Chemin du Moulin du Nord) make it an accessible and emblematic site of Flemish industrial heritage.
