Origin and history

The Grands Jardins windmills are two buildings located in Montfaucon-Montigné, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built in the second half of the 19th century, specifically in 1860 for the West Mill, they belonged to Joseph Chauveau. These tower-type mills have distinct architectural features: one, cylindrical, holds grinding wheels and a Watt regulator inside, while the other, truncated, shows vestiges of its orientation machinery. Their roof, now destroyed, reveals traces of their original mechanism.

Both mills were registered as historic monuments by order of 2 January 1976, recognizing their heritage value. The site also includes ancillary buildings, such as the miller's home and agricultural outbuildings, demonstrating the traditional organisation of a windmill in operation. Their location to the north of the village of Montigné-sur-Moine, on precise cadastral plots (A 302 and 384), highlights their anchoring in the Angelin rural landscape. Their present state, partially degraded, contrasts with their central historical role in flour production and the local economy.

Available sources, including the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirm their protected status and administrative address in Sèvremoine (a commune created by the merger with Montfaucon-Montigné in 2015). Their geographical accuracy is estimated to be poor (level 5/10), reflecting the limitations of historical data retained. These mills illustrate the evolution of milling techniques in the 19th century, as well as the adaptation of rural infrastructure to the agricultural needs of the period.
