Origin and history
The house Mugnier is a house located on Rue du Montet (or rue de l'Orme according to the sources) in Virieu-le-Grand, in the department of Ain. Built in the 4th quarter of the 15th century, it has been listed as historical monuments since 1927. Locally, it is also known as Maison Callet or Maison Godefroy, with reference to its successive occupants. The Base Mérimée is known as Maison Mugnier, in tribute to Pierre Mugnier, its designer in the 16th century, although its construction dates back to the previous century.
The building faces another classified house, the Todeschini House, also protected in 1927. These two buildings illustrate the importance of the civil architectural heritage of Virieu-le-Grand, in the former Rhône-Alpes region (now Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Mugnier House, with its variable denominations, reflects the social history of the place, marked by changes of influential owners.
Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) highlight its official inscription and approximate location, noted as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10). No information is provided on its current access (visit, rental, or accommodation), but its status as a historic monument makes it a key part of the Ain and Bugey heritage.
