Windmill of the Fosse (Box A0 132): inscription by order of 23 February 1977
Origin and history
The windmill de la Fosse is a building located in the commune of Barbâtre, in Vendée (Pays de la Loire). This monument, typical of the rural buildings dedicated to milling, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 23 February 1977. Its architecture and location reflect traditional cereal processing techniques, essential to the local economy before the industrial era.
In coastal regions such as Vendée, windmills played a central role in the daily life of agricultural communities. They allowed to grind the grain to produce flour, the basis of food, while serving as a social gathering point. Their decline from the 19th century coincided with the advent of industrial mills and modern transport, marking the end of an era when these structures dominated the rural landscape.
