Origin and history

The Tue-Loup windmill is an iconic building located in Saint-Julien-de-Concelles, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built between 1870 and 1880, it embodies the architecture of the tower mills of the second half of the 19th century, designed as small wind mills. This monument is distinguished by its height and its four floors, illuminated by brick bays with segmental arches. Its internal mechanisms, still intact, testify to its past functioning, although its wings, once equipped with Berton flights, have now disappeared.

Filed under the title of historical monuments by order of 11 December 1979, the mill of Tue-Loup illustrates the local industrial and artisanal heritage. Disused in the 21st century, there remains a vestige of traditional milling techniques, while being owned by a private company. Its inclusion in the inventory of historical monuments underlines its architectural importance and its role in the economic history of the region.

The Tue-Loup mill is part of a larger set of windmills in the Pays de la Loire, characterized by their imposing structure and their function of flour production. These buildings, often built in height to capture prevailing winds, played a central role in rural life, providing a source of renewable energy before the era of industrialization. Their decline, from the 20th century onwards, reflects the technological and economic changes that marked the French countryside.
