Origin and history
The water mill of the Grange, located on the Fouzon in Chabris, is a fontevrist foundation attested from the middle of the 12th century. This site, occupied since ancient times, illustrates the continuity of milling activities in the region. Its historical and technical interest rests on the exceptional preservation of its 19th century production mechanism, unique among the Fouzon mills still in operation in 1876.
The hydraulics of the mill, including bays, canals, weirs and valves, date in part from the Middle Ages and were maintained for operation until the modern era. These facilities, still visible today, demonstrate the ingenuity of the water management systems developed for the milling of cereals. The site, protected by decree in 2019, also covers surrounding plots such as the Prairie du moulin or the Pré aux clercs, highlighting its territorial anchor.
The mill of La Grange embodies the transition between medieval and industrial techniques, with a 19th century mechanism integrated into an older structure. Its inscription as a Historic Monument highlights its role in local economic history, where flour mills were essential infrastructure for rural communities. The scarcity of its state of conservation makes it a valuable testimony to this technical and architectural heritage.
