Origin and history

The Lillebonne Municipal Museum, located in the former town hall opposite the Roman theatre, was founded in 1897. It presents archaeological remains of Juliobona (Ancient Lillebonne), capital of the Calètes during the Gallo-Roman period (I–IV centuries). The 19th century excavations revealed public buildings (theatre, thermal baths, necropolises), including two remarkable funeral sets: Marcus' grave and Handisyde's collection. These discoveries illustrate the urbanization and romanization of Caux.

Reorganized and expanded from 1948, the museum reopened in 2018 with a modern scenography. It exhibits nearly 300 Gallo-Roman pieces, supplemented by objects from the reserves of the Museum of Antiquities of Rouen. An ethnographic section evokes the local trades (Melamare pottery, textiles, wigs) and Norman furniture. The church of Mesnil-sous-Lillebonne houses collections of mineralogy and paleontology from the Pays de Caux, as well as religious altars.

Labeled Museum of France, the establishment is distinguished by its territorial anchor, combining archaeology, industrial history and natural heritage. The regularly renewed temporary exhibitions enrich the presentation of this heritage. The accuracy of its location is considered fair (note 5/10), and its official address is 7 rue Victor Hugo in Lillebonne (Seine-Maritime).
