Origin and history
The ancient terrace wall of Bourgoin-Jallieu is a Gallo-Roman vestige discovered in 1981 during construction work in the White Cross district. A rescue search conducted in 1982 cleared the 57-metre-long retaining wall, suggesting a possible thermal unit, although this assumption was not confirmed by subsequent surveys in 1989.
The plot was made inconstructible and acquired by the commune after the discovery. The wall, located between the White Cross and La Grive, was classified as a historical monument by order of 11 September 1987. It is the only listed monument owned by the municipality.
The site, nestled in a wooded and agricultural area, is accessible via the White Cross impasse. It dominates the Bourbre plain, close to the nearby municipality of L-Isle d-Abeau. Access is facilitated by exit 7 of the A43 motorway and line D of the Ruban local network.
This vestige illustrates the importance of Gallo-Roman infrastructure in the region, although its exact use (thermal or otherwise) remains uncertain. The municipality has preserved this heritage, making it accessible while protecting it from modern constructions.
