Origin and history
The Museum of Natural Sciences and Prehistory of Chartres finds its origins in the natural history collections gathered in the 19th century by Captain Devilliers. These first acquisitions, partially destroyed during World War II, formed the core of future exhibitions. The museum, as it exists today, was rebuilt after the war and inaugurated in 1968 in its current premises, located boulevard de la Courtille.
The current collections offer a complete panorama of prehistory in Eure-et-Loir, complemented by elements of geology, fauna and local flora. Among the remarkable pieces are reference fossils, such as those discovered at Saint-Prest, as well as objects illustrating the evolution of regional natural environments. The building itself, a former chapel of Marceau High School, bears witness to 19th century school architecture, adding a heritage dimension to the scientific vocation of the museum.
Labeled "Museum of France", the establishment covers a variety of fields, ranging from basic sciences to archaeology, ethnology and fine arts. His interest lies as much in the richness of his collections as in his role of preserving and disseminating knowledge about the local natural and historical heritage. The accuracy of its location, noted as poor in the databases, does not alter its educational and cultural value for the region Centre-Val de Loire.
