Origin and history

The Museums of the Ain Countries were founded in 1986 by the General Council of Ain to structure a territorial cultural network. Their initial mission was to create a network of museums of society and territory, covering the different countries of Ain. The project aimed to enhance local heritage through museum poles in the department, combining conservation, dissemination and partnerships with public and private actors.

The network is structured around seven sites: four departmental museums (the Bresse Museum in Saint-Cyr-sur-Menthon, the Bugey-Valromey Museum in Lochieu, the Revermont Museum in Treffort-Cuisiat, and the Resistance Museum in Nantua) and three spaces dedicated to temporary exhibitions (the Bonnet Silkeries in Jujurieux, Fort-l'Écluse in Léaz, and sites in Dombes and Pays de Gex). These institutions cover various fields such as archaeology, ethnology, history, or the natural sciences, reflecting the cultural and historical diversity of the department.

Labeled Museum of France, this network is managed by the Departmental Conservation of Ain, based in Bourg-en-Bresse (34 rue du Général Delestraint). Its role goes beyond the mere preservation of heritage: it actively participates in the cultural planning of the territory, collaborating with associations, communities and local economic actors. The accuracy of its administrative location is confirmed by its Insee code (01053) and its connection to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
